Ciara Sivels, Black Nuclear Engineering Ph.D. Student Makes History

Meet The First Black Woman To Earn A Nuclear Engineering Ph.D. From Nation's Top Program
Huff Post Images

This Chesapeake, Virginia native is taking the world by storm by making history as the first Black Woman to receive a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University Of Michigan, which has the top program in the country! This is exciting news, especially for Black Women. As we know, Black Women make up a small percent of degree holders in the Engineering field (2.9% just for the bachelor’s degree category!). For women overall the percent is roughly 23.2% according to for Doctoral degrees. Although we have a ways to go with seeing more Women of Color in these fields, it’s great to be able to live in a time where Women are continuing to grow and increase their presence in various career fields.
